The season closes with the lush colours of Korngold and the bristling intensity of Mahler’s fifth symphony.
In Mahler’s symphony, sombre marches and storms are overcome by music of light and hope, giving the work its compelling arch. Korngold’s brings the flair and flamboyance of his Hollywood days to a heartfelt work that has deservedly won its recognition in the modern repertoire as, perhaps the last great Romantic concerto.

Korngold in Hollywood and on the concert platform
Korngold was an Austrian wunderkind who took his considerable talents to Hollywood just as war broke. There he wrote film scores of new scope and invention, ‘wordless operas’ as he called them. We’ll enjoy some of those classic scores and see what they meant for his return to the world of concerts and concertos.
