BBC NOW: Stephen Hough plays Beethoven

Location: The Brangwyn

Ludwig van Beethoven
Piano Concerto No 4 in G major

Gustav Mahler
Rückert-Lieder
Symphony No 10 – Adagio

BBC National Orchestra of Wales

Thomas Søndergård – Conductor

Stephen Hough – Piano

Catriona Morison – Mezzo

Mahler’s set of orchestral songs was the first of its kind. The listener is taken from the everyday pleasure of a smelling a flower to the midnight of the soul. The unfinished tenth symphony was a deeply cathartic work for the composer, helping him to come to terms with his broken marriage and impending death. Meanwhile, right from the solo opening chords, Beethoven gently finds new ground within the piano concerto genre.
